FREMONT — A driver hit and killed a pedestrian early Thursday in Fremont, police said.

The collision happened around 4:30 a.m. near Fremont Boulevard and Delaware Drive, according to the Fremont Police Department.

The pedestrian was taken to an area hospital, where they later died from their injuries. The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau will release the person’s identity after it is confirmed and their next of kin is notified.

The death marked the city’s seventh traffic fatality of the year.

An investigation determined the driver was traveling southbound on Fremont Boulevard, approaching Delaware Drive, when the front driver’s side of their vehicle hit the pedestrian, police said.

At the time of the collision, the pedestrian was either walking or riding a bicycle eastbound across Fremont Boulevard near the south side of Delaware Drive, police said.

There is a marked crosswalk on the south side of the intersection, but police said they did not know if the pedestrian was in the crosswalk or further south of the intersection.

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, police said, adding that drugs or alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Anyone with information related to the case can contact the police department’s traffic unit at 510-790-6760.
