CASTRO VALLEY — A wrecked car fell off a tow truck and onto the BART tracks in Castro Valley Tuesday afternoon, interrupting service between the Castro Valley and West Dublin/Pleasanton stations, according to a transit agency spokesperson.

The incident stemmed from a three-vehicle crash just before 3 p.m. on westbound Interstate 580 near Castro Valley Boulevard. All westbound lanes and the left eastbound lane were closed following the collision, the California Highway Patrol said.

One of the cars involved in the crash was being loaded onto a tow truck when it fell onto the tracks below, according to BART spokesperson Michelle Robertson. The car was unoccupied at the time.

A crane plucked the car from the tracks around 5:30 p.m.

BART service was restored around 6 p.m., but there were major delays due to trains running on a single track.

Major repairs will take place later tonight after regular service ends, Robertson said.

In an update just before 6:10 p.m., the CHP said all lanes of the freeway were open.
