SAN JOSE — Zebra Technologies and bioMerieux reported to the state Employment Development Department their separate decisions to cut jobs in moves that will eliminate a combined 196 positions in San Jose, official WARN notices show.

Starting in April 2026, bioMerieux will slash 121 jobs at its site at 130 Baytech Dr., the biotech company’s WARN notice to the EDD states.

France-based bioMerieux will close its entire facility on Baytech Drive by the end of 2026 in a permanent shutdown. The layoffs will occur in two phases. The first will take place starting on April 3, 2026, and the second on Dec. 18, 2026.

“All employees at the facility will be impacted,” Erica Ruffin, bioMerieux senior vice president of human resources, wrote in the WARN notices. “This closure is expected to be permanent.”

Illinois-based Zebra Technologies, whose products include smart data capture software and hardware systems, plans to eliminate 75 jobs in North San Jose.

Zebra said shifts in its strategic thinking played a significant role in the company’s decision to launch the layoffs.

Starting on Feb. 9, 2026, workers at the company’s site at 2811 Orchard Parkway will lose their jobs, the WARN notice states. The layoffs will continue until March 31, 2026. The cuts will be permanent.

“Zebra is exploring strategic options for its robotics automation business, and all options being explored will result in a significant reduction of the workforce supporting that business,” Stephanie Bock, Zebra Technologies director of global people service center, wrote in its WARN letter.

The company’s decision regarding the robotics automation business will affect employees at Zebra’s Orchard Parkway site. None of the affected employees have the right to bump other workers who have less seniority, the company stated in the WARN notice.

The San Jose office site might shut its doors.

“Zebra has determined that the San Jose location is no longer required to support Zebra’s operations due to changing business needs,” Bock wrote in the WARN letter.

The layoff decisions arrive on the heels of major job cuts in the Bay Area by an array of tech companies.
