APTOS — Local authorities are investigating an attempted kidnapping that occurred in the Mid County area this past weekend and have asked for the public’s help as the search continues.

Deputies with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office were alerted between the hours of 5:30-6:30 p.m. Saturday to an attempted kidnapping of a 9-year-old girl near the 600 block of Saint Andrews Drive in Aptos. As she walked through the neighborhood, the girl recounted to local law enforcement that a gray minivan stopped in the roadway before a white man allegedly exited the vehicle and began to chase her.

The girl managed to run to safety with friends, causing the man to then return to the minivan and drive away while reportedly also failing to stop at a nearby stop sign.

The man suspected of engaging in the kidnapping attempt was described as appearing to be between 25-30 years old, with an average build, buzz haircut and wearing a T-shirt with black shorts.

The Sheriff’s Office has asked anyone that might have witnessed the incident, observed a suspicious gray minivan in the Aptos area or has relevant home surveillance footage to contact its office at 831-471-1121.
